Rousseau’s opera, Le Devin du Village (The Village Soothsayer), was a great success.

Music held special interest for him and he composed pieces and wrote about music in the 1750s. Readers new to Rousseau are often unaware that he was an accomplished composer. This was especially the case with philosophical contemporaries, such as Voltaire and Hume. Collaborations would abruptly end, at times bitterly, and without notice. Rousseau had complicated romantic relationships and friendships. Their life together was not without controversy, however: they had five children together, all of whom they left at an orphanage in Paris. In 1745 Rousseau met Thérèse Levasseur, who would become his lifelong partner they eventually married in 1768. In 1742, Rousseau was introduced to Denis Diderot by 1744 he was in Paris contributing articles on music to Diderot’s and d'Alembert’s Encyclopédie. An autodidact who wrote with difficulty, his interests ranged widely. Later in life, he tried his hand as a composer, a novelist and an educational, political and ethical theorist.ĭuring his appointment as a tutor in the 1730s, Rousseau was introduced to the key figures of the French Enlightenment. Early years would find him a house servant, a frustrated apprentice engraver, Catholic priest-in-training, music copiest and teacher.

The word to describe Rousseau’s life is peripatetic. Rousseau’s mother, Suzanne Bernard, died shortly after Jean-Jacques’s birth in Geneva on June 28, 1712. Rousseau’s life was colorful, complicated and included moments of great personal tragedy and intellectual achievement. However, it is undeniable that Rousseau’s natural education thought played an important role in opposing the feudal thought at that time and made a great contribution to the development of pedagogy in later generations. Finally, it comes to the conclusion that Rousseau’s view of natural education is based on the criticism of feudal education and has the limitations of the times and revolutionary radicalization to a certain extent. With Emile as the bibliography and the social situation of France in the 18th century as the background, this paper analyzes the educational purpose, process, principles and methods of Rousseau's nature education. This paper mainly uses the method of literature research. The main purpose of this paper is to explore Rousseau's Emile nature education thought and its influence on the development of modern education. Emile is Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s work on his educational ideas.
